Assignment 5: SAMBA client

Configuration and checking of frontend and windows VMs as SAMBA clients

Finally, we focus on the SAMBA client side, both on the linux client (frontend) and windows client (client-w7) that we should create and install using MS WINDOWS.

Linux SAMBA Client

The frontend VM should mount the shared directory /export/samba using the SMB/CIFS protocol on server-03:

1. Install on frontend the packages required by SAMBA in order to deploy the SAMBA client side on frontend that allows us to carry out resource sharing between both UNIX/Linux and MS-Windows platforms.

2. On frontend, list the SMB shared resources of server-03.

3. Connect to server-03 from frontend using SMB and user4 credentials. Browse (navegate) the samba directory.

4. Try to make a new directory in the samba directory.

5. Connect using the CIFS protocol:

   • Create a new directory called /remote/samba on frontend.

   • Install the packages needed to mount a SMF file system on frontend:

     • cifs-utils

   • Mount manually the shared directory /export/samba (mount.cifs) on/remote/samba (frontend)as user4:

   • Mount options:

     • File system type: cifs

     • gid: 513

     • dir_mode: 0775

     • file_mode: 0775

   • Make sure the mounting is permanent.

MS Windows SAMBA Client.

First, build a new GPC Windows Server virtual instance 2:

1. Configure the new virtual instance, using the “dgsi-instance” VM template

   and these parameters:

   • Host name: windows.localdomain

   • Network type: Ephimeral custom

   • Internal IP address: 10.128.0.101

   • External IP address: Ephimeral

   • Boot disk:

     • Server with Desktop Experience, x64 built

   • Disk: Standard Persistent Disk

2. You need an RDP client (Remote Desktop) installed in your local host to connect to the new instance console.

   • Before connecting to it, you need change your password for that instance:

   

   • From the same windows client host, add the new VM to that “domain”:

     • Workgroup: LOCALDOMAIN

   • Connect to server-03 from windows using the network environment of Windows:

     • When you open the network environment, the system will detect the SAMBA server (server-03) automatically (*):

       1. Enable “network discovery”

       2. From Windows client, consider that issue: [15]

       (*) If network environment of Windows doesn’t automatically detect our samba resources (server-03), use the URL from windows file explorer and just type: \\server-03\samba

     • Connect to it using user4 credentials.

     • Browse (navigate) the shared resources of the SAMBA service …
